Mapping and training for the preservation of European video collections

INA launches a questionnaire to identify and map the not yet digitized video collections in Europe, and to evaluate the training needs. The aim: to propose a dedicated training program to European professionals and to contribute to the preservation of the European audiovisual heritage.

To foster and support the preservation of the European audiovisual heritage, INA designed a European program dedicated to the digitization of video collections, in partnership with EBU and FIAT/IFTA. It aims at the implementation of an itinerant training program for the digitization of obsolete video formats, declined in several workshops, each one dedicated to a specific video format.

This initiative follows a prior workshop dedicated to Quadruplex 2-inch videotapes digitization organized by INA at the Radio Television of Serbia, in March 2019. This 4-day training session, addressed to RTS members and delivered by two INA experts successfully met local needs and expectations.

Thus, INA would like to expand this training program at a European scale to foster and support the preservation of Europe's audiovisual heritage.

  1. Questionnaire

The first step of this initiative consists in the mapping the non-digitized obsolete video formats in European. A questionnaire opened between January and the 27 april 2020 will enable

  • to assess the volume and type of the European obsolete video formats not yet digitized,

  • to map these  video collections

  • to evaluate the training needs to ensure their digitization

  1. Report

Based on the questionnaire’s results, INA will write a report identifying and mapping the non-digitized video collections in Europe, as well as an analysis of the training needs.

In addition, the report’s aim will be to inform and raise awareness about the necessary actions to preserve European video heritage.

  1. Training program

The final aim of this initiative is to design and implement an itinerant European training program for the digitization of obsolete video formats declined in several workshops, each one focusing on a specific video format. The first workshop will be dedicated to Quadruplex 2-inch videotapes and will be addressed to all European professionals working for the digitization of video collections.

Please, take 5 minutes of your time to help us define the workshop program, and so for the safeguarding of European video collections!
